August 24, 2021, Sturgeon County Council Meeting Recap

Here are the highlights from the August 24, 2021, Sturgeon County Council Meeting:

  • Sturgeon County residents will have increased access to services and supports offered through Family and Community Support Services thanks to $165,000 investment from Pembina Pipeline Corporation. The three-year funding agreement includes $20,000 towards specialized counselling therapy and supports; $25,000 towards suicide intervention training and resources aimed at increasing education and awareness; and $10,000 towards seniors’ supports and services that promote aging in place.
  • Council heard presentations from two County residents requesting tax relief. At the end of the presentations, Council directed Administration to bring the matters back to a future meeting for consideration.
  •  A public hearing was held for Bylaw 1551/21, which would amend the County’s Land Use Bylaw to allow redistricting of a five-acre parcel of land located near the ProNorth Industrial Park from Agriculture to Direct Control.  The proposed bylaw will come back before Council for consideration of second reading at the September 14 Council Meeting.
  •  Council gave second and third reading to a new Surface Drainage Bylaw, which will allow the County ability to respond quickly to resolve drainage issues, including those caused by the activities of landowners altering the natural flow of drainage on their property.
  •  After considering the request by a County resident on July 13, 2021, Council voted not to approve his request for a refund of 7,340 kilograms of residential tree waste. Council directed Administration to bring this matter back to a future Council meeting with recommendations for alternative solutions.
  • Council approved the conditions of sale and the reserve bid for properties that are in tax arrears. Administration will continue to work with the property owners to clear their tax arrears, but if left unpaid, the properties will be offered for sale by public auction November 10, 2021.
  •  Council received the final report of the COVID-19 Recovery Task Force, which was formed to assist residents, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report outlined key matters, including the County’s investment to address broadband connectivity, the move to more increased digital customer service options, and tax payment flexibility for residents and business owners. Upon submission of the final report, the Task force has been dissolved, but there will be ongoing conversations on priority areas including through the Economic Development Advisory Board, the Community Services Advisory Board, and Council.
