Economic future of the Villeneuve Airport takes flight at the Alberta International Airshow
Sturgeon County and Edmonton Airports sign agreement to promote economic development of the Villeneuve Airport and surrounding area.
As part of the festivities of the inaugural Alberta International Airshow, on Saturday, August 21, Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw and Tom Ruth, President and CEO of Edmonton Airports, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes the framework for collaborative economic development for the Villeneuve Airport and the surrounding area.
The MOU highlights the potential of the Villeneuve Airport region as an economic driver that will bring more jobs and boost the local, regional, and provincial economy. It will also help facilitate shared investment attraction programs within the area as well as the support for long-term land use and infrastructure requirements.
“The Airport and the entire Villeneuve area is vital to Sturgeon County’s future. Driving job creation to support economic growth, we have formed the Villeneuve Landing Network and are investing in projects like high-speed internet and our recently announced waterline. This agreement with Edmonton Airports is a signal to investors that Villeneuve is open for business and that we’re committed to working together as a region to support responsible growth and sustainable economic prosperity.” Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor, Sturgeon County
"I want to recognize the leadership of Mayor Alanna Hnatiw and Sturgeon County for embracing a vision of the future for Villeneuve Airport and the surrounding area. This MOU can be a catalyst as an important economic driver for the entire Edmonton Metropolitan Region, advancing our collective goals of more jobs and more investments. We look forward to future collaborations, including with the Villeneuve Landing Network and area businesses." Tom Ruth, Edmonton Airports President and CEO
The agreement is also a major step forward for the Villeneuve Landing Network, a collection of municipal and economic development organizations focused on economic growth and diversification at the Villeneuve Airport and the surrounding lands.
The Villeneuve Airport is recognized as a premier general aviation airport and flight training facility in the Edmonton Metro Region and currently generates over $60 million in economic output. Future economic opportunities for the area include flight training; transportation and logistics; aeronautical maintenance; manufacturing; innovation; clean energy; and defence and security.
