Sturgeon County & Town of Morinville focus on identifying & prioritizing current programs & services

Joint Statement: Morinville, AB – On February 20, 2019, the negotiating teams from Sturgeon County and the Town of Morinville continued their discussions to better deliver services between the two municipalities, in accordance with the Modernized Municipal Government Act.
The meeting focused on identifying and prioritizing current programs and services, provided by each municipality, that could lead to potentially improved service delivery through the Inter-municipal Collaboration Framework (ICF). This list will now be the focus of future discussions to develop cost effective and mutually beneficial services for residents of our respective municipalities. As well as potential programs and services that would benefit through broader deliberations with sub-regional municipalities.
According to Mayor Barry Turner, “today was an important step in building consensus and prioritizing which services will be examined in greater detail to the benefit of our residents.”
“It is important that we continue to work closely together to better understand our respective positions and that our shared commitment will provide lasting benefits to the residents of Sturgeon County and the Town of Morinville,” said Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw.
The Town of Morinville is represented by Mayor Barry Turner and Councillors Nicole Boutestein and Stephen Dafoe. Sturgeon County is represented by Mayor Alanna Hnatiw and Councillor Karen Shaw and Deputy Mayor Patrick D. Tighe.
Under the Modernized Municipal Government Act, municipalities with common boundaries, must, within two years create a framework that:
- Provides for the integrated and strategic planning, delivery and funding of intermunicipal services,such as water and waste water, solid waste, transportation, recreation and emergency services.
- Stewards scarce resources efficiently in providing local services, and
- Ensures municipalities contribute funding to services that benefit their residents.
